This is a picture from Bambi! It’s a mother bird protecting her babies from the storm during the song “Little April Shower”. In the Book of Mormon, just after a major earthquake and storm, Christ tells his people four times, “how oft would I have gathered you as a hen gathereth her chickens, and ye would not.” The Bible says this several times as well.
A mother hen could have been a mother chicken, a mother turkey, or mother quail, or anything. In the Ancient Americas, it makes sense to be a mother turkey, because that was a special animal to Native Americans. But it could be anything.
I chose a picture from Bambi, because that image is ingrained in my mind from my youth. The heavy storm that beat upon all the animals and terrified young Bambi. The mother hen, protecting her children from danger.
How does Christ protect us like a mother hen? He shields us by taking the damage to his own body. By all accounts, he was physically tortured for us. His body and spirit was used to suffer for our sins. I think many mothers would do the same for their children, but only a God could do it for all of God’s children physical, emotional, and spiritual pain. Because of Him, we can live life with confidence and hope that our mistakes won’t condemn us. That we can be protected from the storms of punishment, if we but just come to him daily in prayer and repentance.
Sometimes we might think God is a terrible wrathful being. But here we see He is a compassionate, loving being, symbolized by a mother hen who’s only concern is to protect her young from the storms of life.
