Prayer is an amazing power that we can harness, if we just do it! I have seen prayers in my life answered just by consistently, and humbly, asking.
Sometimes it would take days, weeks, months, or even years. But, many times, when I’ve been consistently asking for a single thing, I’ve seen it answered. It might not have been answered in the specific way I wanted, but it was clearly answered in a satisfying way.
Usually these prayers were about deep struggles in my life. Trying to find a job just after graduating college. Trying to deal with depression during my young adulthood. Trying to find a purpose in my 30’s. These are things I’ve prayed about, and have found specific answers to. I’m here to say it’s real. God is there. He hears your prayers, and he can answer them if you simply pray consistently. Daily, probably more. But remember, prayer is not just asking. It’s pleading. It’s humbling ourselves to God.
Prayer is so powerful, I think sometimes we might “get what we asked for” to our own condemnation. Remember the story of Joseph Smith praying to show the Book of Mormon translation manuscripts to others, and God saying no the first couple times, but then yes the last time. Only to end up loosing those manuscripts. Be careful not to pray for things that are of little importance.
The scriptures teach us that God will grant unto us our righteous desires. This week we read that.
And whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall receive, behold it shall be given unto you.
3 Nephi 18:20
Therefore, we have a right and duty to pray for those important good things in life. And we can expect them to be answered.
The first thing to pray about is whether God is even real. That prayer has been answered for me powerfully before in my teens, and many times after that. If you don’t have that answered, that’s the first thing to get. There really isn’t a lot of things better than having God tell you, through the Holy Ghost, that He exists and loves you. That alone is enough to get through life.
The second is praying for important things in life like health, career, family, etc. I believe, if we consistently pray, everyday, for something specific and righteous, then God will lead us to it. We just need to have focused prayer, every day, to harness that power.
This principle is so important, so powerful, Christ taught it not just in the New Testament, but in the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants as well:
Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened.-3 Nephi 14:7-8
Think of something you need and try pleading for it everyday no matter how long it takes.
