What’s amazing is Christ Himself has defined what his gospel is. He told his people in ancient America, as recorded in the Book of Mormon. It is in 3 Nephi 27:31-21.
But first, what does the word “gospel” even mean? And why is it important?
“Gospel” means the “good news” or “good story” or “good message”. But good for what? Why is it good?
3 Nephi 27:19-20 suggest that it’s to get us back into God’s loving presence. And the good news is there’s a plan to get us back to God in the next life, and I personally believe it’s a plan to get God’s presence into our lives today.
Just imagine life feeling God’s influence and love day to day. Or a hope of life with God after death.
So What is His Gospel?
What’s interesting is how Christ begins and ends his definition, by saying “This is my gospel”. This repetition at the beginning and end tells us that what is in between is important.
If we break this down, the beginning is what Christ has done for us (verses 13-15). And the ending is what he has enabled for us to do, to have God in our lives (verses 16-20).
The beginning tells us that:
- Christ came into this world. And he was crucified for us, which gave him power to bring us back from death, into God’s presence.
The main goal of Christ is to bring us all back worthily into the presence of God. He and the Father are happy when we return.
However, we all mess up in life, and make mistakes that hinder us from coming to God. Christ has enabled a way to cleanse us. So the ending tells us that we must do:
- Faith, repentance, baptism, receiving the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end following Christ.
This is what we call the doctrine of Christ. A simple five step plan. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been given the authority to perform these baptism too!
For me, this is a repeating plan. Every day, I need to exercise faith, repent, take the sacrament to renew my baptism, and seek the influence of the Holy Ghost. Doing all this helps me feel God’s presence in my life.
This is all enabled by Christ. The gospel is all about Him, and His Atonement is all about us.
I’ve needed this clear understanding about the gospel in my life. And I know it’s real because it’s lead me to feel God’s presence in my life. And I know it can do the same for you. To me, the gospel is the Gospel of God’s Presence.
